How Ownership Works

Ownership comes in many different formats.

Whether you’re a sole owner or member of a  syndicate, Max Comley racing has an ownership package to suit your requirements. With a friendly but professional approach, Max always has the door open for new owners as well as existing owners.

Ownership can be daunting for new or perspective owners but we aim to keep the process as simple and easy as possible.

How do I get a horse?

Firstly, if you’re interested in having a horse with us, please get in touch. You may already have a horse you intend to put in training but if not, Max regularly attends the sales and has plenty of contacts within the bloodstock industry so we can source a horse for all budgets and requirements.

I’ve now got a horse, what next?

Once you’ve got a horse, you’ll have to register as an owner with the British Horseracing Authority. This is very simple and can be done using an online application form. If you’re part of a syndicate, you don’t have to worry about this stage as only the syndicate manager needs to be a registered owner.

What do I get from racehorse ownership away from the racecourse?

The journey of racehorse ownership isn’t just at the racecourse, it starts at the yard. Max has brand new, purpose built facilities and a brilliant team who will care for your horse daily based in the quiet cotswold village of Naunton. You will receive regular updates from Max with photographs and videos of your horse on the gallops and in the stables to give you a thorough insight into the day to day routine and around the clock care of your horse. You’ll be welcomed to see your horse on the gallops with Max and enjoy the owners experience at the yard. Max also puts on regular owners days at the yard where you can meet the team, horses and socialise with other like minded owners.

What happens on raceday?

Race day. Once your horse is fit and ready to run, Max will contact you with potential suitable races for you and your horse. Max will always give owners plenty of notice of potential race days and entries. Entries are published in most cases 6 days before the race and at this stage we can see what other horses are entered and whether it looks a suitable race for your horse. The Declaration stage is where we decide if we intend to run in the race we’ve entered. This is 48 hours before the race.

Once race day comes around, you will be allocated owners badges which allow you entry to the racecourse and hospitality in the owners and trainers area. You’ll receive lunch and get well looked after by the racecourse. Before the race, you’ll come to the paddock to see your horse and meet Max to discuss the plan. Your jockey will then come to the paddock in your colours where you can discuss the plan and race tactics for the race.

What happens after raceday?

After race day, your horse receives the best after care. Your horse will be trotted up in the morning after the race by their groom and checked over by Max and the team at MCR. You’ll receive an update in the morning to let you know your horse is okay and a plan going forward. The aftercare is very similar to human athletes and may include ice therapy, physiotherapy, top nutrition and they’ll be monitored closely to ensure they recover as well as possible.
